Sheffield Archives houses many resources which will be of benefit to the family historian. For the beginner here are a number of sources which should be consulted when undertaking genealogical enquiries. Sheffield Local Studies Library            
The Library collects and preserves over 30,000 volumes of printed material relating to Sheffield and the surrounding area including; Telephone Directories 1960 onwards, Electoral Registers since 1843, Trade Directories from 1774, Newspapers since 1787 and much more. Staff are available to advise and help people who are unable to visit the library. They will try to answer enquiries received by post, telephone or E-mail, but unfortunately are unable to undertake lengthy research.

Sheffield Flood of June 25, 2007 [BBC]
"Hundreds of people have fled their homes in three villages in South Yorkshire amid fears a dam is about to burst after torrential rain. Engineers are trying to reinforce the wall holding back the Ulley reservoir near Rotherham after cracks appeared. A 68-year-old man and a teenage boy died in separate incidents in Sheffield and a 28-year-old man was killed after becoming stuck in a drain in Hull. Elsewhere weather conditions are easing after severe flooding across England. Sheffield remained virtually cut off from the rest of the country as the transport infrastructure all but ground to a halt. Bus and rail services are severely disrupted and many major roads are closed....More from the BBC>>

Sheffield Daily Telegraph
The Sheffield Telegraph is a weekly newspaper published in Sheffield, England. Founded in 1855 as the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, it was the city's first daily newspaper, published at 08:00 each morning. After taking over the Sheffield and Rotherham Independent in 1938, it dropped the "Daily" from its name. See also Wikipedia Sheffield Telegraph.

The Star (Sheffield Star)
The newspaper which subsequently became The Star began as the Sheffield Evening Telegraph, the first edition of which was published on 7 June 1887. It soon took over its only local rival, the Sheffield Evening Star, and from June 1888 to December 1897 it was known as the Evening Telegraph and Star and Sheffield Daily Times, then from 1898 to October 1937 as the Yorkshire Telegraph and Star. In 1931, it took over the Sheffield Mail, which had been its main rival since 1920. From 1937 to November 1938, the newspaper became the Telegraph & Star, and finally, from 14 November 1938 until the present, The Star.
