ILLUMINATED TRAM CAR - DECORATED WITH LIGHTS
FOR THE VISIT OF
KING EDWARD VII AND QUEEN ALEXANDRA TO SHEFFIELD IN 1905

Note the King and Queen peering through the tram windows!
The Tramway people seem to have excelled themselves in the matter of that illuminated tramcar. The car was the popular sensation of the Kitchener visit, and it is again the popular sensation. It is indeed a miracle of light, and a great credit to the officials who have prepared its fairy wonders for the delectation of the public. It would be difficult to estimate the number of juveniles it has kept out of bed after orthodox hours. In this respect there has been a pretty generous license all the week. If the King and Queen had no time to spare for the decorations-many of which by the way they must have seen before - the young people and our country visitors have feasted on them. |

The clip shows the parade of household cavalry and a glimpse of the Queen in her carriage. Other early films in the Archive include prints of film made by the pioneer Louis le Prince who recorded on film, activities on Leeds Bridge in 1888. His images are said to be the earliest ever production of moving images and represent a landmark in film history."
