About the Counties                                    << Back to Top >>

Historic Counties of England (Wikipedia)
The establishment of counties had begun by the 12th century, although many boundaries date from far earlier, incorporating Saxon and Celtic divisions; however, some borders did not assume their commonly-recognised form until considerably later, in some cases the 16th Century. Because of their differing origins, the counties varied considerably in size. The county boundaries were fairly static between the 16th Century Laws in Wales acts and the Local Government Act 1888.

Family History & Genealogy Societies (Genuki)
This page provides means of finding information about societies whose interests relate to the UK & Ireland as a whole,  together with links to further Genuki pages listing societies that are devoted to smaller geographical areas, such as individual counties. Genuki provides information about a given society simply by linking to its web pages where these are known to us. Otherwise, if the society is a member of the The Federation of Family History Societies, or the Scottish Association of Family History Societies, they provide a link to the postal address listings these provide.

The National Archives
The National Archives is at the heart of information policy, setting standards and supporting innovation in information and records management across the UK, providing advice on opening up and encouraging the re-use of public sector information. Through our efforts in promoting best practice in information management, we look to ensure the survival of today's information for the future.  The National Archives is also the UK government's official archive, containing 900 years of history with records ranging from parchment and paper scrolls through to digital files and archived websites. The National Archives makes open records available to all, either onsite or online, continuously developing new tools to make history tangible for everyone.  See Getting Started if you would like to use The National Archives.
