About the Counties                                    << Back to Top >>

Historic Counties of England (Wikipedia)
The establishment of counties had begun by the 12th century, although many boundaries date from far earlier, incorporating Saxon and Celtic divisions; however, some borders did not assume their commonly-recognised form until considerably later, in some cases the 16th Century. Because of their differing origins, the counties varied considerably in size. The county boundaries were fairly static between the 16th Century Laws in Wales acts and the Local Government Act 1888.

Family History & Genealogy Societies (Genuki)
This page provides means of finding information about societies whose interests relate to the UK & Ireland as a whole,  together with links to further Genuki pages listing societies that are devoted to smaller geographical areas, such as individual counties. Genuki provides information about a given society simply by linking to its web pages where these are known to us. Otherwise, if the society is a member of the The Federation of Family History Societies, or the Scottish Association of Family History Societies, they provide a link to the postal address listings these provide.

The National Archives
The National Archives is at the heart of information policy, setting standards and supporting innovation in information and records management across the UK, providing advice on opening up and encouraging the re-use of public sector information. Through our efforts in promoting best practice in information management, we look to ensure the survival of today's information for the future.  The National Archives is also the UK government's official archive, containing 900 years of history with records ranging from parchment and paper scrolls through to digital files and archived websites. The National Archives makes open records available to all, either onsite or online, continuously developing new tools to make history tangible for everyone.  See Getting Started if you would like to use The National Archives.

Family Records
This site aims to help you find the government records and other sources you need for your family history research. The site is divided into two main sections: Topics and Partners. In the topics section you will find information on Births, Marriages & Deaths, Census, Migration etc. In the partners section, you will find information on each member of the FamilyRecords.gov.uk consortium.

British Isles GenWeb
The BritishIslesGenWeb Project (formerly known as the UKGenWeb Project) has been online since early 1997. Their dedicated group of volunteers (some local and some throughout the world) are active researching in the British Isles. We pride ourselves on being "available" and being "friendly" -- offering helpful advice to new researchers. We are a non-commercial entity and work hard to form collaborative relationships with many British Isles resources on the internet. We do not provide research for a fee nor do we recommend professional genealogists for hire. We do not engage in research for others -- although some of their volunteers do offer to do lookups, at their convenience. Our goal is to provide the "essential elements" that new researchers need. Among those are quality informational pages, pertinent addresses, county maps, query and surname resources, and friendly mail lists.
